A television drama adaptation, starring Miyazaki Yoshiko, of the tumultuous autobiographical novel by Chiyo Uno, a female writer who lived through the Meiji, Taisho and Showa eras. Having turned 18 that spring, Chiyo took up a post as a supply teacher in her hometown of Iwakuni, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Her wayward father had died a year earlier, and the family’s livelihood now depended on Chiyo’s income. Once a plain-looking girl, Chiyo began wearing make-up and started to attract the attention of men. She grows in confidence and matures into a woman who lives freely.
