Rites
This weekend features the work of Australian choreographer Stephen Page, artistic director of the Aboriginal contemporary company the Bangarra Dance Theatre. This opening presentation is their interpretation of Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring, performed together with the Australian Ballet, which fuses traditional Aboriginal dance with modern stylings and seeks to capture the spiritual essence of the four elements - earth, wind, fire and water.
Urban Clan
A profile of the three Page brothers - choreographer Stephen, whose ballet Rites was screened last night, composer David and dancer Russell. Based in Sydney, Australia, they form the creative core of Aboriginal contemporary dance company Bangarra, and have developed a distinctive vocabulary that fuses their traditional heritage with contemporary experience, as shown in their latest work, Fish.
Checkmate
The Sadler's Wells Ballet perform a story of love and death played out on a chessboard to a score by Sir Arthur Bliss. Recorded in 1981, the work is being shown in tribute to Dame Ninette de Valois, who created the piece in 1937, was a founding member of the Royal Ballet and this year celebrates her 100th birthday. The leading roles are taken by David Bintley, Margaret Barbieri and David Ashmole.
Coppelia
The Lyon Opera Ballet perform a modern interpretation of this classic story about a toy-maker and his life-sized doll. Choreographed by Maguy Marin and with Léo Delibes 's score conducted by Kent Nagano , this version is set in the housing estates of contemporary Lyon.
Rosas Danst Rosas
This signature work by Belgian choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker was created in 1983. Film-maker Thierry de Mey's version of the work has been set in a deserted school building, but at its heart lies De Keersmaeker's almost hypnotic choreography.
Men
Created by choreographer Victoria Marks and scored by Andy Teirstein, this dance is set among the Rockie mountains of Canada. Seven Albertan septuagenarians perform a series of movements reflecting their lives, while the elemental permanence of the backdrop accentuates the fleeting nature of the men's mortality.
