The Sentence

Accused of complicity in the deportation of 1,600 Jews in 1942, Maurice Papon—a former high-ranking official under the Vichy regime, and later a prefect, member of parliament, and minister—cited coercion, while the prosecution emphasized his conscious responsibility.
