Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn was born at the beginning of the 17th century into a family of the established middle class. At the age of 18, he became an independent master and opened his own studio. He treated mainly religious themes and explored the Bible. In his perpetual quest for the intimacy and truth of the human being, Rembrandt established a new way of painting.
