Singapore had actively encouraged immigration and foreign investment over the past few decades in a bid to trigger economic growth. On the assumption that the nation's only resource was its labor force, various measures were put in place to bring in more workers. Including people with permanent residency, almost 40% of the small nation state's people are now foreign nationals.
