Kwame Phillips

Kwame Phillips is an anthropologist and filmmaker, specializing in visual and sensory media production, ethnographic documentary, socio-cultural anthropology, material culture and soundscapes. His work is multidisciplinary and broadly focuses on resilience, race, social justice and Diaspora studies. Kwame received his PhD in Anthropology and Film and Media Studies from Emory University in 2014. His PhD research, “Rivers of Blood and Babylon: an ethnography of social suffering and resilience among Caribbean service users in London” explored the experiences of British Caribbean service users in the mental health system, how they were disproportionately affected by structural and institutional forces, and how they were able to find strength in community by drawing from shared cultural practices and experiences.
